Papaya is a member of the Carica family. Its botanical name is Carica papaya.

The stems and bark can be used in rope production. The black seeds can be dried, ground and used as a pepper substitute. Both the leaves and the flesh of the fruit can be used in traditional and herbal medicines. This species has separate male and female plants.

Papaya is an edible fruit perennial, it will last at least up to several years in its native climate.

Papaya normally grows to a tree habit with a max height of 11.89 feet (that's 3.66 metres metric).

How to grow Papaya

Plant 1/2"-1" deep. Soil moderately moist 75-85°F . Can fruit from seed in 9 months.

Papaya plants prefer full sun and like to be dried between watering. Papaya trees like to grow against the house walls where there is more warmth. They like to be sheltered from wind. Excessive moisture are very detrimental to them.

Papayas do not tolerate salty water or soil.1
