Eggplant 'Galine'

Solanum melongena

How to grow Eggplant 'Galine'

  • Full Sun

  • Very High

When five or six fruit have set remove the rest of the flowers as it is unlikely the plant will be able to sustain any more. Water regularly and feed with tomato fertilizer.
Nip out the growing tip when the plant reaches 30cm to encourage side shoots with flowers

A full sun position will ensure your plant thrives and remember to water very often. Keep in mind when planting that Galine is thought of as tender, so it is really important to ensure that the outside temperature is well above freezing before planting or moving outdoors.

Growing Galine from seed

Start early in the year under glass at 18 to 20C using good compost mixed with vermiculite

Look to ensure a distance 1.95 feet (60.0 cm) between seeds when sowing - bury at a depth of at least 0.2 inches (0.5 cm) deep. Soil temperature should be kept higher than 15°C / 59°F to ensure good germination.

By our calculations, you should look at sowing Galine about 42 days before your last frost date.

Transplanting Galine

Pot on when the plants are large enough to handle into 7cm pots and continue to grow at 16 to 18C in good light
Choose final growing position carefully, if you are growing aubergine in cooler climates. It would grow best in a greenhouse but as a minimum it must have a sunny warm position to allow the fruit to develop and it could be grown in a container if attention is paid to its water requirements

Ensure that temperatures are mild and all chance of frost has passed before planting out, as Galine is a tender plant.

Harvesting Galine

Harvest fruit when they have reached a good size and allow only four to six fruit to develop on each plant
In cooler climates, provide protection at night, such as plastic sheet or fleece to extend the ripening season

Expect harvests to start to occur in late summer.
