Upright Burhead Etymology

The genus name Echinodorus is derived from the Ancient Greek echninos (hedgehog) and doros (bag, leather bottle)2, referring to the spiny achenes/ovaries in some species, forming a prickly head of fruit1. The species name berteroi is named after Carlo Giuseppe Bertero (1789-1831), an Italian physician2.
