How to grow Japanese persimmon 'Fuyu'

  • Full Sun

  • Medium

Grows well in both sub-tropical and temperate climates.
Adapts well to different soil types as long as they are deep, rich and well drained.

A position protected from winds in full sun is best.

Apply fertiliser as recommended annually in Winter. A light pruning only is required as persimmon produce fruit on current season’s growth.
Harvest when fruit are well developed and of characteristic colour.

Try to plant in a location that enjoys full sun and remember to water moderately. Fuyu is generally regarded as a half hardy plant, so it will require protection in frosts and low temperatures.

Growing Fuyu from seed

Transplanting Fuyu

Plant in well-worked moist soil (incorporate fertiliser and/or compost) ensuring the bud union is at least 10cm above soil level. Water well and keep moist until established.

Fuyu is half hardy, so ensure you wait until all danger of frost has passed in your area before considering planting outside.

Harvesting Fuyu

This variety tends to mature and be ready for harvest in early autumn.
