How to grow Sweet corn 'Country Gentleman'

  • Full Sun

  • High

Extremely tall variety. If your gardening area is prone to wind gusts or higher winds it may blow down. Will normally recover fine if simply stood back up and “propped” at the roots with soil.

Harvest time in Northern US is mid to late summer.

A full sun position will ensure your plant thrives and remember to water often. Keep in mind when planting that Country Gentleman is thought of as tender, so remember to wait until your soil is warm and the night time temperature is well above freezing before moving outside. Ensure your soil is loamy and clay and has a ph of between 6.5 and 7.5 as Sweet corn is a weakly acidic soil to weakly alkaline soil loving plant.

Growing Country Gentleman from seed

Plant in blocks of 3 to 6 rows instead of one long row to insure good wind pollination. Thin seedlings to 8 inches apart. Does best in well-drained, fertile soil.

Try to aim for a seed spacing of at least 7.8 inches (20.0 cm) and sow at a depth of around 1.17 inches (3.0 cm). Soil temperature should be kept higher than 21°C / 70°F to ensure good germination.

By our calculations, you should look at sowing Country Gentleman about 14 days after your last frost date.

Transplanting Country Gentleman

Ensure that temperatures are mild and all chance of frost has passed before planting out, as Country Gentleman is a tender plant.
