How to grow Pasque flower 'Red Cloak'

  • Partial Sun

  • Medium

Pulsatilla enjoys bright and well drained conditions. Once planted they may self seed and form small clumps

Try to plant in a location that enjoys partial sun and remember to water moderately. Keep in mind when planting that Red Cloak is thought of as hardy, so this plant will grow or become dormant during the winter. Planting Red Cloak in loamy and sandy soil with a ph of between 6.6 and 7.8 is ideal for as it does best in weakly acidic soil to weakly alkaline soil.

Growing Red Cloak from seed

Pulsatilla can take up to 9 months to germinate and there are various stratigies.

Hopefull the most straight forward will surfice. Sow in trays of good seed compost in a propergator or warm place at an optimum temperature of 15C.

Alternatively, try this. After trimming any ‘tails’ from the seed to help prevent them going mouldy, sow in a pot of good seed compost and seal in a plastic bag or propergator at 13-18C for one month. If nothing has come up, chill for 3-6 weeks in the fridge and then return to the 13 to 18C conditions. Keep the compost moist at all times but not wet

Soil temperature should be kept higher than 13°C / 55°F to ensure good germination.

Transplanting Red Cloak

Transplant into 7cm pots when the seedlings are large enough to handle and grow on in a cold frame. Plant out in the following spring into moist but well drained conditions in full sun

As Red Cloak is hardy, ensure temperatures are mild enough to plant out - wait until after your last frost date to be on the safe side.
