How to grow Quince

Cydonia oblonga

Quince prefers to grow inland because in moist, coastal areas they are more likely to be attacked by fleck, which is a streaking of the wood caused by insect attacks. They also cannot grow in places where the temperature drops below -15 degrees F (-25 degrees C), but must have a cool period during winter in order to produce fruit. It is best to grow more than one quince tree and more than one variety. While quince trees are capable of self-pollination, they produce more fruit when they are cross-pollinated. Suckers should be removed. If grown from seeds, expect fruits in about 5 years. 2

Harvesting Quince

When fruit turns a golden yellow it is time to harvest. Can be left in the tree longer but should be picked before the first frost.3
