How to grow Montbretia

Water about every 1-2 weeks in summer. Cut back the foliage in fall after it has died. Divide in fall if clump is getting too crowded or if you wish to propagate it. Mulch well in winter in cold winter regions. Feed lightly with balanced fertilizer, once in spring and again in early summer.

It is recommended (for zones 5 and 6) the corms be dug up in fall and stored to overwinter as for gladiolus (do not allow them to dry out).¹

Growing Montbretia from seed

This plant is very easily propagated by division. As most garden cultivars are hybrids, growing from seed is not recommended.

Transplanting Montbretia

Bulbs should be planted in spring, summer or fall at a depth of about twice their size, in a location that gets summer sun. A good rich neutral loam is preferred but this plant is highly adaptable. May become invasive in favorable conditions in mild climates.

Montbretia is very hardy, so ensure you wait until all danger of frost has passed in your area before considering planting outside.
