Hydrangeas need protection from the heat and scorching sun. Broken branches should be trimmed as your hydrangea comes out of dormancy. Dead leaves should be cleared away from the center of the plant and around the shrub. Fertilize in the spring as the plant comes out of dormancy. A foliar feeding is recommended when the plant shows signs of stress, during hot weather, and if it has been blooming profusely. Prune off spent flowers throughout the season. Since this hydrangea blooms in old and new growth alike it can be pruned to size and shape at any time the plant is actively growing.1
