nigra likes a position of full sun and remember to water moderately. Keep in mind when planting that nigra is thought of as hardy, so this plant will survive close to or on freezing temperatures. A soil ph of between 4.5 and 8.0 is ideal for nigra as it does best in moderately acidic soil - weakly alkaline soil.
