How to grow Iris 'Deep Black'

  • Full Sun

  • Medium

Divide the clump after a few years to prevent it becoming congested and encourage flowering. Discard the older rhizomes in the centre of the clump but preserve as many roots during the division as possible.

Try to plant in a location that enjoys full sun and remember to water moderately. Keep in mind when planting that Deep Black is thought of as hardy, so this plant will grow or become dormant during the winter. Try to keep the ph of your soil between the range of 6.1 and 7.8 as Deep Black likes to be in weakly acidic soil - weakly alkaline soil.

Growing Deep Black from seed

May not come true from seed, but much easier and quicker to flower from rhizome cuttings taken after flowering in late summer.

Sow at a depth of approx. 0.99 inches (2.55 cm) and aim for a distance of at least 1.19 inches (3.05 cm) between Iris plants.

Transplanting Deep Black

Choose a hot sunny well drained possition and plant with the rhizome showing as sun on the rhizome helps the plant to make better flowers next season

Ensure that temperatures are mild and all chance of frost has passed before planting out, as Deep Black is a hardy plant.

Harvesting Deep Black

Iris do not last long as cut flowers but stems can be picked as the buds just begin to show some colour

This variety tends to be ready for harvesting by early summer.
