How to grow Garden nasturtium 'Spitfire'

  • Full Sun

  • Medium

Try to plant in a location that enjoys full sun and remember to water moderately. Keep in mind when planting that Spitfire is thought of as tender, so remember to wait until your soil is warm and the night time temperature is well above freezing before moving outside. Ensure your soil is loamy, sandy and clay and has a ph of between 6.1 and 7.8 as Garden nasturtium is a weakly acidic soil to weakly alkaline soil loving plant.

Growing Spitfire from seed

Soak seeds overnight or for at least 4 hours before planting.

Try to aim for a seed spacing of at least 1.95 inches (5.0 cm) and sow at a depth of around 0.5 inches (1.27 cm). Soil temperature should be kept higher than 18°C / 64°F to ensure good germination.

By our calculations, you should look at sowing Spitfire about 14 days before your last frost date.

Transplanting Spitfire

Can be started in 2 1/2 in. containers and transplanted when they are about two inches tall. In Florida my nasturtiums prefer partial sun especially when days are long.

Ensure that temperatures are mild (minimum night temperatures should be around 18°C / 64°F) and all chance of frost has passed before planting out, as Spitfire is a tender plant.

Harvesting Spitfire

Harvest the leaves and flowers when the supply is plenty.
