How to grow Rose 'Darcey Bussell'

  • Partial Sun

  • Medium

Prune only lightly by dead heading and taking out diseased dead or crossed growth. Pruning for English roses is normally done in the dormant season reducing growth of the remaining shoots by about a half to a third.
After pruning, work in carefully (roses have surface roots) some blood fish and bone. Dead head through out the flowering season to promote new blooms and give a second dose of blood fish and bone after the first flush of flowers

Try to plant in a location that enjoys partial sun and remember to water moderately. Keep in mind when planting that Darcey Bussell is thought of as hardy, so this plant will survive close to or on freezing temperatures. Ideally plant in loamy soil and try to keep the ph of your soil between the range of 5.5 and 7.0 as Darcey Bussell likes to be in weakly acidic soil to neutral soil.

Growing Darcey Bussell from seed

Hybrid. Will not reliably grow true to type from seed.
Rose bushes are commercially produced by grafts onto root stock. It is however, possible to take hard wood cuttings in the late autumn. These are set into a prepared trench in a shady part of the garden, it takes about a year for the roots to form and the following year they can be potted up individually

Transplanting Darcey Bussell

Roses enjoy a sunny position and grow well on clay.
To plant a bare root rose, during the dormant winter season, dig a large hole wide enough to take the roots without constriction, and deep enough so that the graft area is below the surface by about 4cm. Back fill adding blood fish and bone, water and firm in.
Container grown roses can be planted at any time of year, loosen the roots that have become tangled in the pot. Add blood fish and bone to the back fill. Container grown roses must be water well as the season progresses as their roots will not establish as quickly as bare rooted roses

Ensure that temperatures are mild and all chance of frost has passed before planting out, as Darcey Bussell is a hardy plant.
