How to grow Rex Begonia

While you plant is growing well, it is a good idea to make some new plants from one of the healthy leaves. Begonias can be made from leaf cuttings, cut the leaf in several places across the veins and place pretty side up in a tray of a mixture of compost and sand or vermiculite. Make sure there is contact between the leaf and the compost, by placing small stones on the leaf. Cover the tray with a plastic bag and keep warm at about 20C. Baby plants form at the cuts. It is also possible to cut the leaves in strips, across the leaf and veins and press end on into the compost.

Can be grown from seed but easier from division of a mature plant or leaf cuttings onto moist compost

Begonia rex is generally grown as an indoor pot plant. Pot up using a peaty mix when the roots are seen at the bas of the old pot

Ensure that temperatures are mild (minimum night temperatures should be around 12°C / 54°F) and all chance of frost has passed before planting out, as Rex Begonia is a tender plant.
