Planting depth should be about 6cm (2in) of soil above the bulb to protect from frost damage or the bulbs can be planted where they half-emerge from the soil. Try not to disturb them after planted. They like to form a tight clump. Flowering may be sparse the first year. Plant in autumn or early winter. Mulch to protect from frost until they are fully established.1
If growing in a container, keep in mind that nerines do not like to be disturbed, so start the plants in a pot large enough for their mature size so that transplanting will not be necessary.
The seeds should be sown when fresh, they will germinate immediately.
Try to aim for a seed spacing of at least 2.73 inches (7.0 cm) and sow at a depth of around 2.34 inches (6.0 cm). Soil temperature should be kept higher than 16°C / 61°F to ensure good germination.Grow in a cold frame for the first year, then plant out in the second year. It may take another couple years for flowering to occur.
Ensure that temperatures are mild (minimum night temperatures should be around -15°C / 5°F) and all chance of frost has passed before planting out, as Guernsey lily is a half hardy plant. These estimates for how long Guernsey lily takes to sprout, grow and harvest are from real observations from real gardeners, right around the world.
