I bought this in Vancouver when I was visiting E. and brought it back on the plane and bus. It was in full flower and quite an armful.
Described as vigorous, blooms mid to late spring, flowers semi-double, cream to rose pink. Evergreen. Hardy to -25C (but other info says hardy to -18C) Zones 6-9. Bred by Clifford Parks, N. Carolina, one of an ‘April’ series.
Native to woodlands in E & S Asia from Himalaya east to Japan and Indonesia.
Acidic soils, high rainfall will not tolerate drought, shallow roots, maintain leaf mould or bark mulch. Balanced fertilizer in mid-Spring and early Summer, do not overfeed. Partial or dappled shade. Protect from cold, drying winds, morning sun. Camellias tolerate hard pruning. Indoors – cool greenhouse.
I am not sure what sort of soil the camellia is planted in.
The camilla lives beside the porch steps in the summer which is partial shade except for sun in mid-afternoon. Last winter I wrapped the container very well, brought it onto the porch and then panicked as the temperatures dipped very low in November and brought it indoors. It didn’t flower and I assume it may need dormancy and cool temperatures to be brought into bloom. However buds should be set by Fall. There is one fat bud that looks as though it is going to flower any time, otherwise none that I have noticed. I would say that my living room counts as cool greenhouse temperature.
