Name the Flower? (and a bit of a rant)

28 May 2010
22°C / 72°F

I found this flower peaking out of the stupid lambs ears that I planted a few years ago and can’t get rid of. I like them (the lambs ears) OK, kids love playing with them, the bees love the flowers and I’d be fine with them if they would just stay put and stop wandering all over the garden, but they don’t!!! So I’ve potted up a small bunch of them in hopes of containing them somewhat and called my SIL, who loves the ones I gave her last year and told her to come get the rest out of my yard! So there, take that, lambs ear weeds!!! //End Rant

Anyway … the mystery flower! I’m sure I must have planted it, but can’t place what it is?
In the first picture you can see the flower, which is sitting atop a very long ~30cm (12"), thin stalk and the lambs ears leaves below it. The leaves of the mystery flower are in the second photo.

Anyone?

Allium? Is it a May blooming bulb?

Posted on 29 May 10 (about 5 years ago)

Alliums typically have 6 petals per flower, not 5. If Allium, it’d have to be a mutant 5-petaled Allium.

More likely than a mutant Allium, this could also be a Claytonia. (Spring Beauty). Spring Beauty is a native Canadian plant that normally has 5 petaled flowers. :) Looks like a highly desirable and uncommon, intense pink form. The flowers of Claytonia are usually pale pink, or white with pink stripes.

Claytonia caroliniana is native to your area, and that’s my first guess about the species. It may also be Claytonia virginiana which is also native to your area, or Claytonia siberica which is introduced. Also could be an improved, showy pink, commercial cultivar of Claytonia. :)

I agree with you about the lambs ears. My GREAT grandmother planted some in a flowerbed years ago here and THEY STILL WON"T GO AWAY!!!! They’re like the cockroaches of the plant world!

Nope, but thanks everyone for the guesses. I just remembered, and confirmed with googled photos & a peek at my seed stash … it’s Armeria maritima (thrift). I guess I just lost track of it last year, oops! Anyway, it’s quite pretty … I think I’ll keep it ;)

@ Fuzzy, ‘cockroaches of the plant world’ LMAO!
Pretty sure Sherry is going to come get the plants next weekend and since they haven’t started flowering yet, I’m hoping this will be the year!!!
