Pruned

21 Apr 2010
Cloudy 18°C / 64°F

I pruned small stuff a few weeks ago but now the roses are leafing up I could see that the two oldest stems were dead. Had to take my saw to them and when I took them down I noticed an interesting growth at the bottom of each. I am not sure whether this is a reaction to winter damage, or a gall, or something else. The inside was a dark granular mass which didn’t appear to have any tenants.
Photos: the bottom of the stem is to the right, there were a number of these lesions on both at the bottom. The stems at the bottom were about an inch diameter. On these stems which are leafing out, there is discolouration and a splitting of the bark. Last year’s stems don’t show signs of discolouration.

How very odd. I don’t believe I’ve seen this before. Hopefully, someone has an answer!
