First Strawberry Harvest for the Year!

28 May 2009
Sunny 24°C / 75°F

This one came as a bit of a surprise – I didn’t realise there were a couple of red berries ready for the picking until I moved a leaf out of the way. Woo! I had these guys on my cereal this morning – yum!

Great! You might try letting them go a day or two more to reach full flavor. Anyone my age or younger is so used to getting underripe fruit at the store that they don’t know what truly ripe fruit looks like. My various strawberries reach a deep red and go from glossy to dull when they’re fully ripe. But it’s true it’s hard to wait that long because a bird or slug might get at them before you do.

Congrats on the harvest!
