10 May harvest

09 May 2009
Sunny 8°C / 47°F

Today’s harvest (clockwise from top left):

  • chives
  • arugula
  • radishes
  • lettuce
  • spinach
  • mustard
  • broccoli rabe

picture 2: little white eggs on the back of the spinach leaves. They seem to be exclusively on large spinach leaves. They’re about 1mm long and maybe .2mm wide and are lin little clusters of about 10 eggs. There are usually a couple of clusters on a leaf. They aren’t on the arugula or the lettuce which are right next to the spinach; they seem fairly spinach specific. I’m now on a mission to eat the spinach leaves before they get big enough to get eggs laid on them. :) That and I’m going to need a place to put my longbeans pretty soon.

Your lettuce is gorgeous. I’m very curious about those eggs — I’m not familiar with any spinach-specific pests.

I’m wondering if they’re leaf miners. I had leaf miners on my beets last year and nothing else. They are in the same family. I should check my beet leaves; I’ve been ignoring them because they aren’t worth harvesting yet.
