Potatoes are sprouting

02 May 2009
Cloudy 18°C / 64°F

The potatoes are now pushing up big green shoots through the dirt – need to think about covering it over with some more soil again. They are doing really well so far.

I’m trying to move all of the tomato and pepper seedlings out the back in the sunshine whenever I get a chance – only prob is that the weather is alternating between “nice and warm” and “really really cold” so I have to keep a close eye on them and make sure I remember to bring them inside.

I’m doing potatoes in a bag too. From my reading it seemed the idea was to let them establish 4 inches or hand’s width of growth, then cover up 3/4s of that with soil/mulch. The logic being it formed more branch point to create leaves than it would to create tubers. But once the leaves were covered they would turn into roots that could produce tubers. Don’t know from experience, but that is what I am going to try. Mine are growing in a very light medium, not a lot of compost and a lot of leaves and straw.
