Biggest one so far

25 Jan 2009
Overcast 26°C / 79°F

Harvested this one today, probably having it for lunch. It’s the biggest one so far. We allowed it to get to about 20 cm or 7 inches long. I was a tad greedy and wanted the plant to grow big fruits so I have been watering the plant even in the late afternoon. I think this has caused the powdery mildew problem to recur. I had used a baking soda solution that was too concentrated the last time, causing the beautiful leaves on this plant to burn. I’m using a more diluted solution this time and added some detergent to make it stick. Have sprayed that on and will refrain from watering too late.

Wow. That’s beautiful. :) Is it an optical illusion, or is it actually longer than the pot?

Thanks! Yes it was longer and it was actually holding itself up sort of. The pot isn’t very big though, just 9-inches across. Now the plant is suffering from a bad case of powdery mildew… kinda heart breaking :(

:( I think cucurbits just get downy mildew eventually. I spent a fair amount of time spraying with baking soda last year.
