We have relocated. When I joined MyFolia, I was in Washington state, then Phoenix. Now we are in Amargosa Valley, NV, one mountain range over from Death Valley, CA.
The valley is an old lake bed. Soil is an alkaline mix of dust and gravel. I think the dusty part is a mix of clay and fine silt. The gravel is fine and sharp and the whole is sprinkled with small stones, including chunks of black volcanic cinders. Places that have been given a lot of water develop a crust of alkali salts.
So, though I don’t know at all how to garden here, I know it is possible. Raised beds seem to a better bet than soil improvement, especially in a rental house. The school where I teach has lovely raised garden beds for the students, so that is a good place to start asking questions.
The photos are moonrise on winter solstice and moonset on the first day of winter.
Does anyone have experience gardening in the Mojave Desert?
