Sprouting: Indoor-sown Seeds

04 Oct 2015
Overcast 19°C / 66°F

The Romaine lettuce and Napa cabbage sprouted in less than 2 days and the rest (with the exception of the cauliflower which showed its first sprout today) started sprouting within 3 days. I’ve been thinning to 2-3 sprouts per cell to prevent crowding; I’m hoping not to have to do any re-potting prior to planting out.

Numbers below indicate the number of cells with sprouts, out of the total number of cells seeded.

For all of the varieties for which I still had seeds, I re-sowed in the sprout-free cells today. Those include: Kale ‘Scarlet’, Kale ‘Premier’, Kale ‘Nero Toscana’, Pak Choi ‘White Stem’, Broccoli ‘DiCicco’, and Lettuce ‘Winter Density’.

I think that I accidentally planted both Kale ‘Nero Toscana’ and Broccoli ‘DiCicco’ seeds into the empty Kale ‘Nero Toscana’ cells. It started pouring again outside, and I got distracted…

I’m planning to do an outdoor sowing of arugula, mesclun mix, braising greens mix, spinach, komatsuna, pak choi, kale, radishes, and beets as soon as the soil dries out enough to make it possible to mix in some compost and bloodmeal.
