Seed Swaps

Sticky & sore

07 Feb 2015

Yesterday I bundled the kids in the car & we went blackberry picking with a friend of mine & her kids. I belong to a herd share & one of the herd share farms offers free blackberry picking every year. It’s great – we get beautiful, organic blackberries & the farmer gets less fruit falling on the ground & sprouting.

I’ve taken my son before. He loved it. Last time he spent most of his time gorging on fruit. This time, he was old enough to productively pick fruit without eating everything in sight.

I managed to scratch up my arms & legs rather badly in the first five minutes – blood streaming down my legs…it looked like something out of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre! But after that, I got wise to the nasty ways of the blackberry bush & was mostly scratch & prickle free.

Not sure exactly how much we picked before heading off to the local cafe for lunch. I guesstimate a couple of kilos? We had some for dessert that night with ice cream – very well deserved! The rest have been frozen & I’ll use them during the year for baking, etc.
