Fertilized: Blueberries & Blackberries

15 Mar 2013
Clear 8°C / 46°F

I fertilized the blueberries and blackberries tonight (see below for details), added county compost (1.5 bags around the blueberries, 7.5 bags around the blackberries), replaced the mulch that I’d pulled away before fertilizing, and watered deeply. I might wear a mask the next time I fertilize; I inhaled a bunch of probably-not-so-healthy particulates while fertilizing today.

I also watered all of the other backyard garden beds. I’ll need to water the front beds tomorrow.

We’re back to fire watch conditions.

Issued by The National Weather Service, Charleston, SC:

FIRE WEATHER WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM SATURDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH SATURDAY EVENING FOR GUSTY WINDSLOW HUMIDITY AND DRY FUELS ACROSS SOUTHEAST SOUTH CAROLINA AND SOUTHEAST GEORGIA

  • RELATIVE HUMIDITY: 20 T0 25 PERCENTEXCEPT 25 TO 30 PERCENT ALONG THE IMMEDIATE COAST.
  • TEMPERATURES: UPPER 70S.
  • IMPACTS: DRY FUELS AND LOW HUMIDITY WILL PRODUCE A SITUATION WHERE FIRES COULD SPREAD QUICKLY AND BECOME AN OUT OF CONTROL WILDFIRES.

I’m ready for some more rain, please!

Good luck with your berries! I love blackberries. They were a cash crop for my great grandparents.

Thanks! I’m hoping that we’ll get prolific and tasty blackberry and blueberry harvests this year, for the first time. I love berries of all sorts. I grew up with red raspberries in my backyard, which were fantastic, but it’s a bit too warm here to grow those. That’s really neat about your great grandparents growing them as a cash crop.
