Possum eating my Broad beans and Peas?

30 Jul 2011
Cloudy 17°C / 63°F

Over the past few weeks I have found that my broad bean and pea plants have been eaten to about an inch from the ground. As the garden is fenced off to prevent my dog from digging, this is possibly allowing the possum to feast on my vegies undisturbed. What can I do to deter the possum? Or is it some other creature?

Hi Lauriej – I have heard that blood and bone sprinkled around the bone is supposed to be effective, though haven’t tried it myself. Apparently they don’t like the smell. I guess you’d also need to keep reapplying to keep the smell present, as it starts to break down. Alternatively there’s enclosure and netting – but that can take a bit of effort. It could be worth putting some rat traps out in case they’re causing the problem.

Yeah, rats were taking my bean seeds earlier in the season AND eating some of the beans :S I have lately had problems with earwigs ugh!
Good luck Laurie!
