Question about compost bag planting

22 Jul 2011

I planted some seeds in compost bags I saw this on you tube. Anyone know if I am supposed to poke any holes in the bottom and also I made small squares on the top where the plant was planted. Should those be bigger? (picture is below. white bags are the bags of compost.

Thanks so much!

Yes, you will need drainage holes in the bottom. Size of top hole depends on eventual size of plant stem but you can always enlarge it later by slitting at each corner of the square and tucking the excess under. It might be a good idea to cut another small hole to sink a small plant pot into for watering. This will keep water away from the stem, which in a young plant can be prone to rotting.

Thank you for the help. That is a great idea about the plant pot! The picture was taken 2 weeks ago so the plants are seedlings now.
