Spring Crocuses about to flower

I have three small troughs on the balcony railings filled with Dwarf Tulips & Daffodils over which I planted some Spring Crocuses in October 2016. These Crocuses are about to flower this week!

This will be the first colour on the balcony in over three months & I do so love them! They are always such a joy to see at this time of the year. Their bright colours liven up the days, especially if we get a few rays of sunshine! They also contain blue that is a scarce colour in February. The contrast between the blue petals & yellow/orange stamens is really eye catching!

I like to have some in the pots & troughs on the balcony every year. I always buy a packet of corms every year to take the place of those that haven’t grown big enough to flower the next spring. I find that a lot of the corms split up into lots of tiny corms that will not flower the following year.

Just today I noticed the very first flower is about to open! It’s cream with brown stripes. I took some photos of it just yesterday but I didn’t expect it to be big enough to open for a few more days yet – I was wrong! (I’m glad to say!)

These Crocuses started to flower about 2 weeks ago. I’ve only seen cream coloured ones as I’ve been away from home these last couple of weeks & haven’t taken any more yet.
