'Walnut trees' Garden

The house where I live, in the shade of two old walnut trees. All around, 3 acres of land, once a pasture for cows and horses. The meadows are sloping and bordered by country hedges mainly made of maples. Near the house I’ve begun sowing and planting flowers in beds and in pots: since now, hollyhocks, irises, columbines, lavenders and roses. I’m learning by trial and error, observing what happens…

Containing 45 plants, cristina's 'Walnut trees' garden is an outdoor garden located in Bedonia, Italy and is grown using organic principles.

This Frontyard garden is located in USDA Zone 7 and has Clay soil with a Partial Sun outlook.

It looks just like a picture postcard! Beautiful

Thank you, Hedge. It’s a pleasant place, indeed, with a lovely view. Here you can live a simple life … though I sometimes miss the town. Luckily the internet exists!

Do you ever get “rust” on your hollyhocks? Here in the states it’s a real problem…I was wondering how you deal with it.

Yes, it happened. I try to prevent in Spring in two ways: 1) I cut the leaves that are in contact with the soil, trying in this way to create an obstacle to the diffusion of the rust; 2) I periodically spray the plants with a solution of copper sulphate.
It seems to work. Good luck with your hollyhocks.

That’s a pretty lot and good bit of land to grow on – very nice!

Do you get walnuts from the trees? I would love a walnut tree but we don’t have enough room. I think we could have a street one though if my neighbours are willing to share. My son got married in May and his new parents-in-law have walnut trees at their home. They live in the South Island of New Zealand. We live in the North Island and we brought home 2 big shopping bags of walnuts after the wedding.
