    De-Bugging The Sage

Despite my excitement over buying three beautiful herb plants yesterday at the farmers market, I didn’t have the energy to repot them last night. I did want to clean up the sage, though, since there were a bunch of dead leaves along the bottom of the plant. (The plant itself is very happy l...

    Blanching Cauliflower

Strawberry Patch garden and Cauliflower 'Snow Crown' Budding
One of my cauliflower plants has a head about 2 inches in diameter and a second plant has one a smidge smaller. I understand that I should tie the leaves up over it (the larger head) to protect it from the sun about now. What do I do if the leaves aren’t big enough to do so?

Himalayan Balsam - Can you compost it?

Just spent a good hour pulling up Himalayan Balsam. Does anybody know if it is suitable to compost at this stage before the flower has formed? I can’t see a reason why I shouldn’t compost it – in fact it grows so quickly and spreads so fast that it might be a great compost cro...

Abundant Harvest No. 1 garden , Mesclun Salad Greens Harvesting, Mystery Salad Mix Harvesting, Radish 'East...
Today I harvested enough for four salad servings from the garden. Given that it is only a month since I planted the seeds, I am quite impressed. The packages of mixed seeds which I planted have some interesting leaf shapes and I would like to know what kind of plants they are. Any ideas about wha...

    Hyacinths blooming

Common Hyacinth Blooming and Borders garden
These are the pictures of the Hyacinths for this year – pink, lavender and white. I have heard some people say that after the first year, Hyacinths do not bloom as full. I haven’t seemed to notice that at all. These looked just as good, if not better than last year.

    When to harvest radishes?

I planted radishes on 4/16/09 and they are looking quite hardy and possible ready to harvest. How do I know when to harvest them?? They are the variety ‘french breakfast’ and the little red tops are peeking out from the soil and have a diameter a little smaller than a quarter. Are the...

    withering basil?

    Basil, Thai
I planted out my basil seedlings into window boxes and containers and started putting them outside during the day to harden off. Many of them look withered and dry. They are getting plenty of water. Any ideas? Shock of transplant? Shock of being outside? Too much water? I’ve done basil seed...

What is this pretty house plant?

    Cape Primrose
This is a house plant given to me as a gift from a work colleague. She’s not sure what it is – some help to identify would be much appreciated! It has substantial fleshy leaves which feel fury to the touch. It currently has a small flower which you can see in the picture and a secon...
