wenjomatic Does chard send up multiple sprouts?

Monday, 18 Aug 08 (posted about 3 months ago)

First time growing swiss chard… I’m noticing multiple sprouts in some of my plantings. I KNOW I only planted one little seed pod thingy per hole. But some of them have 4-5 sprouts.

1) is that normal?

2) how much should I thin them?

It is quite normal- I’ve read that beets, which chard is a variation on, have ‘cluster’ seeds, so each ‘seed’ you plant is actually a cluster of seeds, and may sprout more than one plant. Mine often do the same. If I’m transplanting I often attempt to gently separate them and plant them as separate plants. Sometimes works, sometimes doesn’t, but at least one seedling always survives from each cluster.

I can vouch for the swiss chard I sent you – those seeds are clusters, and I got more than one sprout per seed. I should have told you that! I thin to one by cutting off the less strong seedlings with scissors.
