Suggestions for low-growing tree or large, narrow shrub.

We have a lilac tree that has bloomed only once since I’ve lived here the last 8 years. I trimmed it back after it bloomed, but only one flower showed up this year. I don’t think it’s getting enough sun and would love to plant something else there that has year-round interest. Does anyone have any suggestions?
It needs to be relatively self-contained and not branch out too much or get too tall. I’d say this lilac bush in its present state is about 6-7 feet tall. So I don’t think anything other 8 feet would be appropriate for that area…unless its something fabulous! :-)
Thanks for any input.

How wide is your space? and how willing are you to prune yearly?
How much sun does it actually get?
I have a couple of ideas, but need some more information. If you want to look them up: Put in a trellis and autumn clematis or flame honeysuckle, cranberry vibernum, oakleaf hydrangea-or other hydrangea, appropriate varieties of azalea or rhododendron

Maybe a japanese maple? Those are expensive though.
I second Janietta’s suggestions of hydrangeas or azaleas and add that there are magnolias that stay around that size. Pieris is also interesting looking.

Rosa glauca would fit that space, it grows long canes from its base. Definately year round interest with purpley canes, bluish leaves, small pink and white flowers, and masses of hips which turn from orange to deep mahogany. And hardy.
