Wenjomatic asked: Does chard send up multiple sprouts?

Posted about 22 hours ago | 2 responses

First time growing swiss chard… I’m noticing multiple sprouts in some of my plantings. I KNOW I only planted one little seed pod thingy per hole. But some of them have 4-5 sprouts. 1) is that normal? 2) how much should I thin them?

This question is about Wenjomatic's adventures in gardening.

Why are these Banana Peppers growing so slowly?
After a month and a half, these about an inch and a half tall. Admittidly, I started these from seed, but they should be bigger by now. <pre>They are in good top soil (purchased from the local landscape supply a couple of months ago.) They get lots of full sunlight too. The beefsteak tomato...

Marko asked: What vegetables to plant in late summer?

What vegetables to plant in late summer?
I live in the California wine country, which is about 60 miles north of San Francisco. At this time of year we are still likely to have a few more hot spells before the weather starts cooling off in September. And there is no danger of seeing any frost until mid December, so the growing seaso...

    Is it dead?
This one gradually lost all it’s flowers. It does have a couple of interesting sideshoots and the foliage still looks healthy. Is it dead or should I just wait for it to flower again?

Cmagnus asked: How do I tell when my squash is ripe?

How do I tell when my squash is ripe?
It’s frighteningly big, but it’s a pale yellow colour. I thought it was a hubbard, but all the hubbard pictures I’ve found online have much rougher skin. This is something more like the bastard love child of a hubbard and a butternut. I’m worried about leavng it on the ...

Hstupno asked: Suggestions for low-growing tree or large, narrow shrub.

Posted about 9 days ago | 2 responses

We have a lilac tree that has bloomed only once since I’ve lived here the last 8 years. I trimmed it back after it bloomed, but only one flower showed up this year. I don’t think it’s getting enough sun and would love to plant something else there that has year-round interest. D...

    Posted about 10 days ago | 8 responses | 1 thumbs up!

What kind of mint is this?
It’s wooly but that’s all I know for sure. It was here when we moved in. My best guess after online searching is apple mint. Any help would be great!

Posted about 10 days ago | 1 response

there’s a smaller growth at the bottom of this loquat that looks like it’s a sucker, but this isn’t a grafted tree…so should i snip him off? is he going to complicate things? or can i just let him grow?

Nax asked: The inevitable "what is it" question

The inevitable "what is it" question
This came up where the han toi used to be, and the leaves look right, but the han toy had huge deep red fronds. This stuff is invasive but easy to pull (not as invasive as the han toi), and will eventually have clouds of the white blossoms. Beautiful late-summer bloomer.

    Posted about 11 days ago

anybody ever tasted the fruit of a Tasmania vine, Billardia longiflora? I tried one of mine recently and it was pretty mealy and not at all tasty. I’m hoping it just wasn’t ripe yet and that they will be delicious in a week or two. anyone have any experience? thanks.
