Common Poppy 'Drama Queen'

Papaver somniferum

Drama Queen is part of the Poppy genus and is a Common Poppy variety. Its scientific name is Papaver somniferum 'Drama Queen'. Drama Queen is a hybrid heirloom (open pollinated) variety. Blooms appear in these approximate colours:   Medium candy apple red and   Blue-violet and   Ivory. When mature, blooms are roughly 10.0 cm (that's 3.9 inches in imperial) in diameter.Leaves appear approximately as a   Moss green colour.

An F6 hybrid which is low in opiates, but very high in attractiveness.
This was created by poppy hobbyists who crossed a P. somniferum with the less-opiate laden Oriental poppy (P.orientale), then crossed the resulting hybrid offspring with more P.orientale… etc.
This was done for six or more generations, selecting for looks and minimizing the potential for chemical abuse.
Result is an OP heirloom-hybrid land race of poppy which is genetically much closer to P.orientale and therefore perfectly legal to grow in the USA, but which also has some of the beauty of somniferum. This variety is still highly variable. In another few generations, this may become a stabilized variety.

This variety is an Flower that typically grows as an Annual, which is defined as a plant that matures and completes its lifecycle over the course of a single year. Drama Queen is known for growing to a height of approximately 1.07 metres (3.48 feet).
