Drumstick allium

Allium sphaerocephalon

Drumstick allium is a member of the Allium family. Its botanical name is Allium sphaerocephalon.

The drumstick Allium has egg-shaped flowers in summer that start off green, then bloom and develop to pink and then clover red-purple. These plants are attractive in a bed or border, especially peeking up through other plants, such as roses, so that their nondescript foliage is hidden. Their vertical presence and eye-catching flower shape are valuable additions to the garden, and they naturalize freely. The charming purple-red drumsticks bloom in midsummer and then fade as summer wears on.

Drumstick allium grows as a perennial and is an ornamental / flower. Being a perennial plant, it tends to grow best over several years (approx 3 years and greater). Drumstick allium normally grows to a erect habit with a max height of 1.95 feet (that's 60.0 cm metric). This plant tends to bloom in early summer. Popular varieties of Drumstick allium with home gardeners are Purple, Hair, and Alpine rosy bells.

Drumstick allium is normally quite a low maintenance plant and is normally very easy to grow - great for beginner gardeners!
