How to grow Achimenes

Achimenes

Use a one-half or one-quarter strength water soluble fertilizer at each watering. Do not allow to dry out during active growth or premature dormancy occurs. Mist the plant regularly and guard against direct sunlight, which will scorch the leaves.

When fall comes, before frost, allow the plants to die back and become dormant by withholding water. Store the pot and its rhizomes dry all winter without watering in a frost-free location at 60 to 70 degrees.

Growing Achimenes from seed

To initiate faster germination, dip the rhizomes in hot water before planting. Pot in a peat-based soiless media with good drainage. Water sparingly until germination occurs. Standing water will rot the roots. Place in filtered light or shade.

Try to aim for a seed spacing of at least 1.99 inches (5.1 cm) and sow at a depth of around 0.98 inches (2.5 cm).

Transplanting Achimenes

Place pot in shady location outdoors and water freely.

Transplant when the plant has filled up the current pot. The new pot should be only slightly bigger.2 Ensure that temperatures are mild and all chance of frost has passed before planting out, as Achimenes is a tender plant.
