How to grow Clematis 'Proteus'

  • Full Sun

  • High

Pruning group B – only light pruning requirement. Actual height may vary. Half day of sun or more preferred; roots like to be shaded (be careful of how you provide shade: stones can cause roots to bake by transferring heat). Proteus will tolerate part shade but is likely to grow toward the light.

Some recommend planting a new young vine so that you bury up to 3" (8cm) of the stem.

Make sure young vines have an adequate root system before planting out. May take up to three years to become well established.

Zone recommendations vary from 3 to 5 and higher.

Plant in a location that enjoys full sun and remember to water often. Keep in mind when planting that Proteus is thought of as hardy, so this plant will survive close to or on freezing temperatures.

Growing Proteus from seed

Look to ensure a distance 1.48 feet (45.7 cm) between Proteus seeds when sowing to make sure your seedlings have enough space.

Transplanting Proteus

Ensure that temperatures are mild and all chance of frost has passed before planting out, as Proteus is a hardy plant.
