Potato 'Bintje'

Solanum tuberosum

How to grow Potato 'Bintje'

  • Partial Sun

  • Medium

Potatoes should be ‘hilled’, for maximum production. Every time the plant grows a few inches, add more soil until the bottom two leaves are covered and allow to grow as usual. At the ends of the seasons potatoes will have formed along the length of the buried stem.

Do not allow the potatoes to dry out completely between waterings.

Try to plant in a location that enjoys partial sun and remember to water moderately. Keep in mind when planting that Bintje is thought of as tender, so remember to wait until your soil is warm and the night time temperature is well above freezing before moving outside. Ideally plant in loamy and clay soil and try to keep the ph of your soil between the range of 5.0 and 6.0 as Bintje likes to be in moderately acidic soil to weakly acidic soil.

Growing Bintje from seed

The tubers can be laid out at room temperature for 7 – 10 days, before planting, so that they develop sprouts before planting.

Sow 5.85 inches (15.0 cm) deep with a guideline distance of 2.92 inches (7.5 cm).

By our calculations, you should look at sowing Bintje about 14 days before your last frost date.

Transplanting Bintje

Ensure that temperatures are mild and all chance of frost has passed before planting out, as Bintje is a tender plant.
