The Lilium genus is home to approximately 110 different herbaceous flowering species, normally growing from bulbs.

Species within the Lilium genus can be divided by species, or within their generalized hybrid group. These are:

Species – all natural species and naturally occurring plants are within this group (not hybridized).
Asiatic Hybrids – Derived from Central East Asia, these are usually unscented with upright flowers
Martagon Hybrids – Petals are strongly recurved with nodding flowers.
Candidum Hybrids – Includes hybrids of L. candidum with several other mostly European species
American Hybrids – Taller varieties, generally clump forming perennials, and originally derived from L. pardalinum.
Longiflorum Hybrids – Generally grown for cut flowers and not in the garden.
Trumpet Lilies – Flowers are based on generally Asiatic species and are trumpet shaped, and tend to be very fragrant.
Oriental Hybrids – Based on hybrids of L. auratum and L. speciosum, they are fragrant and flowers tend to be outward. “Stargazer” belongs to this category.
Other Hybrids – All other garden hybrids.
