GreenGuy's Bean 'South carolina red stick' was

Tough as nails, easy to grow organically. Tolerated heat, soil nematodes, powdery mildew, some flooding, brief drought, poor rocky soil, pest insects, even some breakage and root disturbance. Just kept right on making beans!

Sprocket1980's Bean - Yellow (Pencil Pod Black Wax) [2012] was Reviewed day 6
A favorite of ours. Very prolific. Delicious steamed together with some green beans, beets, thinly sliced onions,home-grown Basil and a little sea salt. Plants need to be supported for best crop.

Very hardy, and came back even after a major deer munching.
They should be picked while smaller than you would think for pole beans, because they get unpleasant tough really quickly when they are bigger – maybe these are better for dried beans then as

Really very tasty, vigorous, hearty, though it needed staking more than I was led to believe. The pods were beautiful and cooked up tender. I wish I had grown more to dry for later.

These are pretty as the beans form — the purple is lovely and noteworthy — but I wasn’t thrilled with the taste when I steamed the beans. If I plant pole beans again I’ll go with Rattlesnake Pole instead of these.

I’ve planted the bush type. These plants are highly productive. The pods are beautiful (curved, marbled, with purple markings). Cooked they are green, tasty and with a nice buttery texture.

These beans seemed to sporadically produce in my garden, but those I managed to harvest were tasty. I’Il grow some of these again if I want to grow pole beans, but I’d probably plant more Rattlesnake Pole as well.

This bean grew well with no problems. Adds variety to the bean harvest as it is a thin “gourmet” type. However, it does have a tendency to go fibrous if left too long before harvest (so check daily).

These are tasty beans! I left some on the vine too long and froze them on a whim even though they seemed a bit fibrous – once blanched they tasted great and kept well in the freezer until mid-winter.

I was lucky enough to find this variety at a Seedy Saturday and it quickly became a favourite. Highly adaptive to many climates, this variety produces like made on huge vines. A must grow every year.
