Ylang ylang Etymology

Philippines legend tells of a childless couple who were promised a daughter by the gods. It was conditional that the girl upon reaching womanhood should never touch a man. The girl was named Ilang which means flower. She grew into a very beautiful woman and had many suitors, however, her parents guarded her from them. One day when her parents were away a young man who loved her dearly, took her by the hand and asked her to be his wife. The girl instantly turned into a tree with beautifully fragrant flowers. The legend says that “the young man cried out ’Ilang! Ilang!” and continues to wander the magic garden to this day.¹
