How to grow Celeriac 'Brilliant'

  • Partial Sun

  • High

Water well throughout the growing period. In midsummer remove outer leaves, and any side shoots if they appear. This will encourage the bulbs to develop.

Position in a partial sun location and remember to water often. Keep in mind when planting that Brilliant is thought of as hardy, so it can be safe to leave outdoors for the majority of winter (although if in doubt, using a row cover is often a good idea).

Growing Brilliant from seed

Soil temperature should be kept higher than 20°C / 68°F to ensure good germination.

Transplanting Brilliant

Plant in May to harvest in September to October, or the bulbs can be left in the ground longer but they will be at risk from slug damage.

Plant in rich, fertile, moisture-retentive soil, so ideal for a damper area of the garden.

When transplanting the seedlings crown must not be buried. This makes the newly-planted seedling very susceptible to drying out in its first week, so gentle and frequent watering is required. Make sure that soil is not washed over the crowns when watering, if necessary, carefully use your finger just to keep the soil clear of the crown.

Ensure that temperatures are mild and all chance of frost has passed before planting out, as Brilliant is a hardy plant.

Harvesting Brilliant

This variety tends to be ready for harvesting by mid autumn.
