Solanum lycopersicum

The standard brandywine is pink to reddish-pink in colour, while many other varieties have been created that range from yellow to red to black.

This tomato is also known as “Pink Brandywine” or “Brandywine Pink” which is actually a redundancy, as the pink brandywine is what most people would just refer to as “Brandywine”.

A type of Fruit, it mainly grows as an Annual plant - which means it typically only grows best for a single growing season. Brandywine is known for growing to a height of approximately 1.60 metres (5.20 feet).

Mexico is thought to be the country of origin for Brandywine.

Keep in mind when planting that Brandywine is thought of as tender, so remember to wait until your soil is warm and the night time temperature is well above freezing before moving outside. As a rough idea of the types of climates Brandywine does best in, check to see if your local area is within USDA Hardiness Zones 3 and 14. Ideally plant in loamy soil and try to keep the ph of your soil between the range of 5.0 and 6.0 as Brandywine likes to be in ericaceous (acidic) soil.

By our calculations, you should look at sowing Brandywine about 42 days before your last frost date.

Transplanting Brandywine

Brandywine folklore & trivia

The origins of the Brandywine tomato are steeped in mystery, although they were shown to be carried in the Burpee catalogue as early as 1886.

From Wikipedia:
It reached modern popularity after being introduced via the Seed Savers Exchange in 1982 by an elderly Ohio gardener named Ben Quisenberry. He received the variety from a woman named Dorris Sudduth Hill who could trace Brandywine in her family for over 80 years. Brandywine has become one of the most popular home garden cultivars in the United States. Due to the proliferation of many misidentified varieties, the pink-fruited, potato-leaved Brandywine is sometimes labeled Brandywine (Sudduth’s).

Lots of flowers, no tomatoes. May be due to not enough sun on balcony for heirlooms

Passable tomato, but if I want beefsteak-type tomatoes again, I’ll go with Vorlons.

This is one of the best tasting tomatos I have ever had. It was also quite prolific producing between 15 and 20 tomatos per plant in my shortened growing season. I will be planting again next year.

I realise this is a popular variety for flavour, but the low production per plant and the time from transplant to harvest just does not justify the effort for me. It is tasty, but only if I have space
