We have 12 eggs to place in the incubator and all going well we’ll end up with at least two hens but we’re hoping for more; we’re allowed six under the council by-laws.
They are Wyandotte bantam eggs bought from Shrimanifarm. Pens 27 & 28, six of each. I can’t fault Shrimanifarms service and delivery, excellent, flawless, personal service and I heartily recommend her as a source of eggs. Yes :) I know they haven’t hatched yet, but that’s up to me and the chook gods now.

Awesome!! What a neat experiment!! I hope that they do well for you!! I will be watching for posts in regards to this. :)
How much cheaper is it to incubate the eggs than to go and buy full grown hens?

Is the insulation all that you are using, or are you also using some sort of heat source? If so, where did you put it? I am interested because we have been thinking about getting some hens, and maybe we could try this instead?

Thanks TropicanRoses, we do to.
They’ll be great additions to the garden and not just in the produce stage. They are great helpers, unlike kids – they are always working, just like kids – they can get into mischief. :0 Well worth having though, if you are able to of course.
It’s probably more expensive.
We are going down this path as we couldn’t get the desired breed of birds (docile, good layers, small frame). We are late starting, there possibly would have been POL (point of lay) birds earlier in the season, but we weren’t ready then. This gives us a lot more control over the type of birds we get – usual caveats of course (please let there be hens, please!)
It will still be worthwhile, our kids are adults now but they remember fondly when we had chooks and raised chicks under clucky mums, they are probably just as excited this time around – just more restrained in showing it ;)
No to the insulation, I’ve since added a journal entry describing the incubator and process. The incubator has heaters, a frypan is used as a heat bank that gets the temperature in the ball park, a soldering iron then maintains the small movements in temperature.
Ask around and you may find someone with one on a shelf, or better yet a clucky mum – the kids would love watching her (from 10 feet so as not to upset her:)

(chuckles) My little guy does not yet understand the benefits of keeping his distance. :) He thinks that the kittens always want to be held and carried about in hug fashion with the lower half of their bodies dangling down to his knees. :)
I’ll have to read your other journal to see how you did this. I can’t quite picture it!!
