    Miditron's Unknown Basil [2] x 1 Purchased

Plant: Basil (Ocimum basilicum) | Variety: Sweet

Three new sweet basil plants purchased from Lowe’s when they were 3-4 inches tall. What cultivar is this? The tag insists it’s just your standard “sweet basil”, but looking at seed packages and doing some research, the leaves look very different. As in the picture, the leaves are always oval shaped and rounded convex.

Interesting. I am pretty new to the veggie/herb game, and I thought sweet basil was sweet basil. Mine is the same as yours, and said the same thing on the package. I have 5 different kinds of basil, and only one of them is called sweet basil. Well, I guess I will have to check this out more thouroughly!

I was at the garden store (again) today and caught a glimpse of a seed pack for “Genovese” Sweet Basil, and it looked like this! Doing internet searches for sweet basil brings me a lot of images of basil with leaves that are more pointed at the ends, have a different texture, and are not as stiff or rounded looking as my plants. Searching for Genovese basil (also called Italian sweet basil, it seems?) gives a mixture of plants like mine and those like I described. Seems like the rest of the world is confused, too! I’ll poke around more during my next garden shop trip.

Alright, I think I’m giving up the search! I’m finding too much conflicting information depending on which seed sites I visit.

Burpee “Organic Sweet Basil” – doesn’t look like my plant

Burpee “Basil, Sweet” – does look like my plant

Burpee “Basil Plenty” – really looks like my plant

So, I don’t know! Either way, it tastes good, so I guess I’ll just have to focus my curiosity elsewhere :)
