I have been growing these Oxalis Deppei ‘Iron Cross’ on my balcony for the last two years. I bought a packet of bulbs in the 99p shop in town in 2011. I was very pleased when they started to grow as the 4 leaf segments with the blackish/purple blotch at the stem end of leaflets do indeed look like an Iron Cross!
They are worth growing just as an ornamental plant for their leaves alone – much like one grows Begonia ‘Iron Cross’ for the same shape in its leaves. The flowers, although nice & cheerful, have very long, weak stems & can’t keep the flowers upright, which is a shame!
I have six 5" pots of them growing this year on my balcony. I lifted all the bulbs last October & spread them out amongst the 6 pots. I hadn’t planned on where to put them this year so I decided to leave them in their pots. They have put on a really excellent show all year. I have 3 pots standing on the surface of each of the 2 square tubs where I have 6ft tall Golden Conifers.
