I planted five onions which I’d gotten from the supermarket, which had already shown signs of growth. Going to see if the onions grow bigger (or if these are shallots), or just harvest the leaves as garnishes.

If you haven’t got the space or patience to wait for the onions/shallots, you could grow them for spring onions. That’s what a friend of mine with green thumbs but can’t cook does. A few days before he decides to make maggie mee, he would stick an onion into the soil. He would then snip the spring onions into his mee.
