In 2010 Mr. Moody of Monroe, ME generously dug up 15+ canes of ‘Grandpa Moody’ blackberry canes which are renowned locally as a fabulous (though not commercial) variety. A visit to a friend of Louise’s who has a nursery, she pointed out that her blackberry canes were Grandpa Moody’s.
Unfortunately, Mr. Moody did not dig roots with all of the canes so only 4 of them actually ‘took’.
2011: Not a good year for these; a ‘critter’ is breaking off canes 4-6" at a time. I’m growing pumpkins in the row as there is so much space from plants that didn’t ‘take’. This didn’t help keep the critter away. I’m planning to use critter deterrent in 2012.
