They’re beans, and they’re long. Australian folians seem to call them snakebeans. In grocery stores in the US, they’re called longbeans. My original seedpacket called them “yard long pole beans.” When harvested, they are typically 1-2 feet long.
Plant in hills of 6-8 around poles, which they will climb, with some encouragement. Once encouraged to climb the pole, they will continue to climb it. Without encouragement, they might try to climb your lettuce, which isn’t good for anyone involved. They like warmth. They don’t like to be planted next to beets. The vines get 7-10 feet long. They don’t need 7-10 foot poles. You can give them person-sized poles, and they will climb back up and down to their heart’s content. They like lots of water. Harvest when the beans are the same width as a pencil (length is irrelevant). If you harvest them when they’re wider, they will be tougher, but they will get longer.
